As a teenager I was one of the first to have visited the Margraten Military Cemetary when it still had a section for burial of German soldiers and the place was one big mud site whilst the bodies in bags arrived and were temporarily placed in their respective graves.
Since then we(wife and I) have payed our respects during every visit back to Holland.
We are very proud of the Dutch people who attend to the needs of keeping contact with family of the fallen and those who are involved in maintaining the cemetary in a pristine shape!
Let's hope that humanity learns to avoid war !

I can't wait for the book to be released. My Father was Emingildo G DeCrescenzo KIA on April 17,1945. I cried when I heard about the book. I was able to visit my Dad once about 15 years ago and it was extremely important and special to me. Unfortunately my Mother never told me much she was broken hearted the rest of her life and couldn't talk about the war. I would be so very grateful for any info about him. Thank you Margare Simek

I worked many years for OCE'( Venlo) and had many occassions to visit the Neitherlands, a beautiful country as well as people. Who have never forgotten American sacrifice in WW2.

My father is buried in Margraten. His name was Harry Heiberger and he was killed on April 16, 1945in southwestern Germany during an intense battle between his regiment ( 319th, 80th division of third army group ) and members of the SS. Specifically, he and three other medics and a german nurse were killed while attempting to evacuate german wounded during the battle. Two american medics, a german nurse and the wounded german soldier died immediately. My dad died later in the day. For his efforts that day he was awarded the silver star and purple heart. My husband and I have visited Margraten to pay our respects and to thank the people of the Netherlands that care for the cemetery where so many americans are buried. I was born two months after my father left for europe. He and his unit joined the battle to liberate western europe when they landed in France in August, 1944. My dad's unit fought in numerous engagements including the battle of the bulge, liberation of Nancy, france, the rhineland and central europe. I am so grateful the people of the Netherlands do so much to commemorate the people who gave it all to make freedom more than an abstraction. I never met my dad, but I live with great pride in his service to his country and the people of europe.

Came across your site after a web search on General Patton. Excellent article on the death of the General; extremely well written and thought-provoking. I was in Europe for my first battlefield tour last summer with my regiment and hope to return to enjoy the hospitality again. Thank you to you and your countrymen for keeping the memories of the sacrifices of Allied servicemen and those who lived under *** occupation alive.
